Princeton alumni are invited to participate in the World Cinema series organized by the Harvard Club of San Francisco, the University of Chicago Bay Area Alumni Club and the University Club.  This new series kicks off Friday, March 4, with Red Sorghum, a film directed by Zhang Yimou (Jung Yee-mo), the foremost director from the People's Republic of China.

Set somewhere in the barren countryside of Northern China in the 1920s and 30s, the film starts with the story of a young girl who is sold by her father for the price of a mule to become the wife of an old leprous man.  She is then waylaid and raped by one of the carriers in her wedding sedan.  After her husband disappears mysteriously (purportedly murdered), she starts to live with the sedan carrier, and together they build an idyllic life in a harsh yet beautiful landscape.  Then the imperial Japanese army invades and their life takes a startling turn.

Touching upon subject matters that would not have passed the Chinese censor a mere decade earlier, this movie was a cultural milestone during China's transition from a totalitarian communist regime to a society that is a blend of socialism and raw capitalism ruled by an authoritarian technocratic oligarchy.

Warning: The film contains scenes of startling violence and barbarity.
