World Cinema Night: Diabolique

Join us for one of movie history's most clever, suspenseful, and delectable thrillers!

Carpe Diem! For if you hesitate, you might just lose the chance of a lifetime. Movie lore says that Alfred Hitchcock was 30 minutes too late in phoning the writer of the original novel for rights to this movie. The great French director Henri-Georges Clouzot beat him to it and was able to showcase his talent in making one of movie history's most clever, suspenseful, and delectable thrillers.

Two women, the wife (Vera Clouzot) and mistress (Simone Signoret) of a headmaster, are friends with each other (leave it to the French to make this work!), united by their hatred of the headmaster, and they conspire to kill their husband and lover. However, a big, deadly surprise awaits one of them in the end and the audience is kept guessing right till almost the final scene.

The movie is in French with English subtitles and features Henri-Georges Clouzot's real life wife as the timid, ailing, long-suffering wife of the headmaster. The legendary Simone Signoret gives an impeccable performance as the sympathetic and scheming mistress.

Note: This movie is not to be confused with the 1996 remake starring Sharon Stone, which was a far inferior movie.
