Exclusive Asian Art Museum "Phantoms of Asia" Tour and Lunch with Dr. Jay Xu *08

Enjoy a private lunch with Asian Art Museum Director Jay Xu *08 on July 28, followed by a tour of the "Phantoms of Asia" exhibition, an extraordinary presentation of contemporary artworks that give a new perspective on the arts of Asia.

This summer the Asian Art Museum presents "Phantoms of Asia: Contemporary Awakens the Past," an exhibition that is unlike anything the museum has ever done.

Life. Death. The cosmos. What’s it all about? Bold new art—along with objects from the Asian Art Museum’s own renowned collection—explore spirits, spirituality, cosmic order, and the afterlife. This is a provocative interplay of 150 artworks from past and present, including paintings, sculptures, photographs, site-specific creations, and more by artists from all over Asia. Pause and reflect on your own place in the universe while taking in some amazing art.

See http://www.asianart.org/phantoms/ to get an idea of what the exhibition includes. However, you need to see it in person to appreciate the scale and diversity of the artworks and special installations.

Thanks to a special arrangement with the museum, on July 28 PCNC members and guests will have an opportunity to have lunch and conversation with Museum Director Dr. Jay Xu *08, before taking docent-led tours of the exhibition. The luncheon with Dr. Xu will be in an exclusive private room that is ordinarily available only to upper-level donors to the Museum. Seating is limited to 35. In addition to talking about the "Phantoms" exhibition, Dr. Xu will also give us an update on his plans for the museum after four years as director.

Dr. Xu came to Princeton from Shanghai as a young graduate student in the early 1990s, receiving his M.A. in 1993 and his Ph.D. in 2008, the same year he became director of the Asian Art Museum. He was profiled in the Princeton Alumni Weekly for January 18, 2012 -

The cost of this event will be $55 per person, including museum admission, lunch, and the guided tour. There is a $10 discount for members of the Asian Art Museum. (To join the Asian Art Museum, go to http://www.asianart.org/membership.htm.)
