La Boheme 12/2 7:30-10:30 San Francisco Dan Sullivan '63
SF Opera Performs Puccini Favorite

Puccini's "La Boheme" is one of the best-loved operas in the repertory, with its mix of romantic passion, poignant tragedy, and high-spirited fun among struggling artists in 19th-century Paris.

PCNC has a small group of tickets in the Balcony Circle for a special non-subscription performance, with a cast led by Melody Moore as Mimi. Moore is a rising young star who has become quite popular with the San Francisco opera audience since her debut with the Merola Opera Program in 2005.

The performance will be conducted by Nicola Luisotti, who will take over as Music Director of the San Francisco Opera next year.

For more information about the international cast and the performance, see the San Francisco Opera website at http://sfopera.com/

The PCNC tickets are likely to sell out quickly, so send your reservation by e-mail as soon as possible, and mail your check (payable to PCNC) by November 10. PCNC members may bring one guest at the member price.

Palo Alto Pub Night 12/5 7-9 Palo Alto Catherine Baker
first Friday

Recover from Thanksgiving excesses - sort of - by making an appearance at Bistro 412 this month. The last Bistro 412 pub night was made all the more interesting by a simultaneous alumni event from a school whose main color was also orange. Utter chaos. Our group, at least, monopolized the barstools...

Saving San Francisco Bay - Again 12/9 6-7:30 San Francisco David Marshak '66
David Lewis '83, Executive Director of Save The Bay

The Cosco Busan oil spill last year focused public attention on San Francisco Bay's fragile ecosystem and current challenges to its health, including pollution prevention and wetland loss. David will describe how the Bay was saved by local citizens in the 1960s, and how individuals are helping improve the Bay today.

"Save The Bay" prevented the Bay from being filled in 40 years ago - now it is the largest organization working to protect and restore the Bay for people and wildlife against current threats, including trash and other pollution that pours into the Bay from our streets and neighborhoods every day. Save The Bay wages and wins effective advocacy campaigns to increase public access to the Bay, establish 100,000 acres of healthy wetlands around the Bay, and protect the Bay from pollution. The organization also educates nearly 10,000 students and adults on the Bay each year and engages thousands of shoreline volunteers.

David Lewis '83 has served as Executive Director of Save The Bay since 1998. A Palo Alto native, David previously worked for 14 years on issue campaign in Washington, DC, including for U.S. Senator Carl Levin and the League of Conservation Voters. He received PCNC's Public Service Award in 2000.

Gather to discuss books with local alumnae

On the second Wednesday of each month, the PWN Book Club gathers in a member's home or an area restaurant to eat, chat, and (usually) discuss that month's literary selection. The location changes from month to month so we can be welcoming to alumnae from all over the Bay Area, and books are chosen by consensus with those who show up! Recent selections have included both fiction and non-fiction, modern and classic, from "Anna Karenina" to "Under the Banner of Heaven", "The Bookseller of Kabul", and "Tales of the City". New participants are welcome all the time. Please RSVP to Amanda Whitehead to be included on the Evite for upcoming meetings with details for each month's book selection and meeting location.
