| Marine
Mammal Center Visit
Let PCNC introduce you to the work of the Marine Mammal
Center, a non-profit rescue and rehabilitation hospital for distressed
marine mammals.
Many of these "patients" are endangered, threatened,
or depleted species. Located in the Marin Headlands, the sole purpose
of The Center is to save marine mammals and their environment.
PCNC has been invited to participate in The Center's
marine environmental program designed to make each of us an informed
caretaker of our oceans and marine life.
Limited to 35 participants, our day begins with an
in-depth tour of the hospital facilities. This will be a "hands-on"
experience as we work with the mammals, learn more about each species,
and understand the scientific research being conducted at The Center.
After a lunch break, we will be taken on a guided beach walk to explore
the habitat. We will learn about the beach and estuarine ecosystem,
and then conclude with a beach clean-up and discussion about the effect
of trash and pollution on ocean life.
Date: Saturday, August 14, 1999 11:00 - 2:30 p.m.
Cost: $20.00 (suggested minimum ... for a very worthwhile
cause!)
For questions and reservations call Melissa Doff '84
at (415) 221-4456.
Please make your tax deductible checks payable to The
Marine Mammal Center, and mail checks to Melissa Doff at 172 Parker
Avenue, Apt. #301, San Francisco, CA 94118.

Festival World Music: An African Celebration
On Sunday, August
15, 1999, starting at 11:30 a.m., PCNC will meet for a picnic gathering
to enjoy a performance in what is always a gala, convivial atmosphere.
The Festival's
grand finale is a colorful celebration of African music featuring Congolese
rumbero Sam Mangwana and Malian singer/guitarist Habib Koite. Mangwana
is one of today's most influential African musicians, combining African,
Latin, Brazilian, and Caribbean influences to an amazing effect. Koite
is internationally known for his dazzling guitar playing and his brilliant
fusion of traditional Malian and modern Western sounds.
Come celebrate
this rich, cultural festival with fellow Princetonians. There is no
charge for this event, but please reserve before the Wednesday of the
event by calling Rachel DuPre '93 at (415) 674-8477.
Reserve early because
space is limited. Directions: Drive South on 19th Avenue, turn right
on Sloat Blvd, and enter through the Vale Ave. entrance of Stern Grove.
Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and passes
may be available to our group.
Be prepared for
sun or fog (hopefully sun!), and bring a picnic. Like last year, we
will one highly coveted table reserved for our group, but we can provide
additional seating on blankets. For general Festival information, call
(415) 252-6252 or visit http://www.sterngrove.org.

| Paradise
by Toni Morrison
Paradise opens
with a horrifying scene of mass violence and then chronicles its genesis
in an all-black town in rural Oklahoma. Founded by descendants of freed
slaves, the patriarchal community of Ruby is built on enforced moral
law and fear. A nearby town is home to female exiles from Ruby who have
gathered in a promised land of their own. In prose that soars with the
rhythms and tragic arc of an epic poem, Morrison challenges our beliefs
as she weaves folklore, history, and myth into an unforgettable meditation
on race, religion, gender, and a far-off past that is ever present.
Discussion will
take place at 5:00 pm on Sunday, August 15 at the home of Jerry Richardson
'64. Jerry lives at 2438 Greenwich St. (@ Scott St.) in San Francisco.
Please RSVP to
Jerry at (415) 563-2672 and volunteer to bring a snack to help feed
our discussion.
