Building Community in Urban America

John Fish '55 is the President of Princeton Project 55 (PP55) and founder of the PP55 Public Interest Program. For 30 years, he was a Professor of Urban Studies in the Associated Colleges of the Midwest Urban Studies Program in Chicago.

While american cities face profound sociological issues, urban communities across the country are reinventing themselves to harness grassroots capacities in order to rebuild local economics, reform public schools and health care institutions, ensure affordable housing, and create citizen driven organizations.

At the same time, following the model of PP55, alumni classes and local alumni clubs are sponsoring interns, developing community building partnerships, participating in tutoring and mentoring efforts, and affecting public policy in a wide range of areas. John will discuss his career focus and how PP55 has dovetailed those efforts.

Please contact the Princeton Club phoneline at (415) 674-8477 or tmount@alumni.princeton.edu to reserve a space for this event.

Democracy in America by Alexis De Tocqueville

As Tocqueville traveled through the United States, he scripted an exhaustive study of the political and social institutions in light of the historical context of the early 1800's. Endlessly quoted and referred to, Tocqueville's great history is as relevant now as when it was first published, and it remains the most penetrating and astute picture of American life ever written.

Due to the comprehensive nature of his project and the brilliance of his prose, Toqueville is considered one of the most insightful analysts of American government. Although there are numerous editions, we recommend an edited and abridged for modern readers version ($5.99, Mentor Books, division of Penguin Books).

Discussion will take place at 5:00 pm on Sunday, November 14 at the loft of Brock Fuller '49, 601 4th Street #227 (@ Brannan Street) in San Francisco. Maps are available. Please RSVP to Brock at (415) 495-0570 and volunteer to bring a snack to help feed the discussion.
