| Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People
Helen Zia '73,
a graduate of Princeton's first coeducational class, is an award-winning
journalist who for twenty years has covered Asian American communities
and political movements. Zia will speak about her newly published book,
Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People. It
is the fascinating story of the rise of Asian Americans as a politically
and socially influential racial group. This groundbreaking book is about
the transformation of Asian Americans from a few small, disconnected,
and largely invisible ethnic groups into a self-identified racial group
that is influencing every aspect of American society. Her narrative
explores the junctures that shocked Asian Americans into motion and
shaped a new consciousness.
Helen Zia's book
also examines the rampant stereotypes of Asian Americans. As the daughter
of Chinese immigrants, Zia was born in the 1950s when there were only
150,000 Chinese Americans in the United States. She writes using personal
accounts of the dramatic changes that affected Asian Americans. Zia
will share her experiences at Princeton during the anti-war years, which
included a sit-in at Firestone library and the creation of the Third
World Center on campus back in 1970.

| A 7-mile loop hike on Mt Tamalpais
This gentle 7-mile
loop is one of Mt Tam's best hikes for spring wildflowers. Meet at 10
a.m. at the Bootjack parking area midway to the summit of Mt Tamalpais.
Bring lunch, liquids, a windbreaker, and sunscreen.
Driving directions: Beginning at the Highway 1 exit from US 101, take
Highway 1 north for about 3 miles, then bear right (uphill) onto Panoramic
Highway. In another mile, Panoramic Highway bears slightly left (and
uphill) at an irregular four-way junction. The Bootjack parking area
is about 2.5 miles further on the right-hand side of Panoramic Highway.
Allow 20-30 minutes for the slow and winding drive after you leave 101.
