| The Bone People by Keri Hulme
Winner of the
Booker Prize and the Pegasus Prize for Literature
In a tower on the New Zealand sea lives Kerewin Holmes, part Maori,
part European, an artist estranged from her srt, a woman in excile from
her family. One night her solitude is disrupted by a vistor - a speechless,
mercurial boy named Simon, who tries to steal from her and then repays
her with his most precious possession. As Kerewin succumbs to Simon's
feral charm, she also falls under the spell of his Maori foster father
Joe, who rescued the boy from a shipwreck and now treats him with an
unsettling mixture of tenderness and brtality. Out of this unorthodoz
trinity Keri Hulme has created what is at once a mystry, a love story,
and an ambitious exploration of the zone where Maori and European meet,
clash and sometimes merge.

| Ravenswood Zinfandel
Few wineries in the
world approach cult status among their devotees … the same can be said of wine
bars. For the first in a series of PCNC tastings, the London Wine Bar in San
Francisco, the oldest wine bar in the United States, is opening its doors and
its cellar of Ravenswood Zinfandel. Melissa Doff will guide us through a unique
horizontal, vertical and reclining tasting of great zins from this great Sonoma
Winery. Appetizers will be provided with the wines.

| Tour of Mission Murals
Start off your weekend
by enjoying a guided tour of one of San Francisco’s hidden treasures: the
Mission murals. See the colorful people’s art of the Mission District, one of
San Francisco’s largest ethnic communities, including a 4-story mural at the
Women’s Building and an 8-story example at Bethany Center. We will meet our tour
guide at Precita and Harrison Streets, behind Flynn Elementary School and next
to Precita Park. Great for all ages!
