| Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee
Winner of the 1999
Booker Prize, Disgrace is set in post-apartheid Cape Town and on a remote farm
in the Eastern Cape. This story is deft, lean, quiet, and brutal. A
heartbreaking novel about a man and his daughter, Disgrace is a portrait of the
new South Africa that is ultimately about grace and love.
At fifty-two Professor David Lurie is divorced, filled with desire but lacking
in passion. An affair with one of his students leaves him jobless and
friendless. Except for his daughter, Lucy, who works her smallholding with her
neighbor, Petrus, an African farmer now on the way to a modest prosperity.
David's attempts to relate to Lucy, and to a society with new racial
complexities, are disrupted by an afternoon of violence that changes him and his
daughter in ways he could never have foreseen. In this wry, visceral, yet
strangely tender novel, Coetzee once again tells truths that cut to the bone.

Let
PCNC introduce you to the work of the Marine Mammal Center, a non-profit
rescue and rehabilitation hospital for distressed marine mammals. Many
of these "patients" are endangered, threatened, or depleted species. Located
in the Marin Headlands, the sole purpose of The Center is to save marine
mammals and their environment.
PCNC has been invited to participate in The Center's marine environmental
program designed to make each of us an informed caretaker of our oceans
and marine life. Limited to 35 participants, our day begins with an in-depth
tour of the hospital facilities. This will be a "hands-on" experience
as we work with the mammals, learn more about each species, and understand
the scientific research being conducted at The Center. After a lunch break,
we will be lead through a specimen exploration in a classroom environment.
We will study a variety of specimens in-depth, to include lab specimens,
mammal skulls, and animal pelts. This is a great event for all ages!

| Marin Shakespeare Under the Stars
The Princeton Club has
reserved a section of seats at the Marin Shakespeare Company's performance, The
Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged). An international smash hit,
this is a hilarious three-man romp through all 37 Shakespeare plays in under two
hours. The Complete Works combines the sophistication of the Marx Brothers, Mel
Brooks, and Monty Python with the crass commercialism of Shakespeare to provide
an evening of knee-slapping fun and irreverent laughter.
Courtesy of Lesley S. Currier '84, Managing Director of the Shakespeare Company,
PCNC tickets are 20% off, and she will give us a special welcome before the
show. The theater opens one hour early and there is plenty of room for
picnicking. Gourmet picnics ($12) and snacks are available or you can bring
your own. There is bench seating (with backs) and free seat cushions. Jackets
and blankets are advised for cooler evenings.
Directions: From Golden Gate Bridge or Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, take 101
North to the Central San Rafael exit. Follow signs to Dominican College. Go
straight four blocks to Mission. Turn right onto Mission, go one block, and
turn left onto Grand Ave. Follow signs to Forest Meadows Amphitheater.
From 101 South, take the Central San Rafael exit, turn left onto Mission, go two
blocks and turn left onto Grand Ave. Follow signs to Forest Meadows
Amphitheater.
You can also take the bus to the main San Rafael terminal. Walk past
Third St to Fourth St. Turn right on Fourth, walk about three blocks
to Grand Ave., and follow signs to Forest Meadows Amphitheater.
