Sunday, June 10, 2001, 9:00 a.m. at Glide Memorial United Methodist Church, 330 Ellis Street in San Francisco. Report to a Monitor in the Lobby, and they'll direct you to the volunteer lunch preparation. Those who have done this have found it rewarding and enjoyable. Glide Memorial is the home of Rev. Cecil Williams and community projects that help residents of the Tenderloin and the city. 7 mile hike in Marin Headlands & Point Bonita Lighthouse

Meet at the west end of the Rodeo Beach parking area. The route climbs steadily to an elevation of about 900 feet, continues along Wolf Ridge, circles back down to the Headlands Visitor Center, and then concludes with a visit to the Point Bonita Lighthouse. The total loop is about 7.5 miles, but it can be shortened to 5 if you don't have time to go to the lighthouse. Most of the route is in the open, so the views can be spectacular. However, it could be foggy, and it will almost certainly be windy. Bring a windbreaker, sunscreen, lunch, and liquids. Water (but not food) is available at the trailhead and Visitor Center.

Driving directions: Going north from S.F. on the Golden Gate Bridge, take the Alexander Ave exit immediately after the vista point at the north end of the bridge. Go north two-tenths of a mile and turn left onto Bunker Road (probably not signed at this junction). You will very quickly come to a one-lane tunnel that is controlled by a stop light. Go through the tunnel and continue on Bunker Road about 3 miles until the road ends at a large parking area for Rodeo Beach. It takes 10-15 minutes to get from 101 to Rodeo Beach.

If you are coming south on 101 towards the Golden Gate Bridge, take the last Sausalito exit (after Waldo Tunnel, just before you reach the bridge), circle back under the freeway for a short distance, turn left onto Bunker Road, and continue through the one-lane tunnel to the end of Bunker Road as described above.

No advance reservations are required, but please let me know if you can offer or need a ride from San Francisco or the East Bay. I will try to put riders in touch with drivers so you can arrange carpools.
