| Mid-Summer hike on Mt Tamalpais |
7/14 |
10-4 |
west of Mill Valley |
Dan Sullivan '63 |
| 6-mile hike down coastal hills to the ocean, returning up
a forested ravine.
Starting at the Pantoll
parking area midway to the summit of Mt Tamalpais, this 6-mile loop descends
gently down coastal hills to a lunch stop by the ocean. The return is a
leisurely climb through the deep forest of Steep Ravine. Bring lunch, liquids,
a windbreaker, sunscreen, and $5 for the State Park parking fee.
Driving directions: Beginning at the Highway 1 exit from US 101, take Highway 1
north for about 3 miles, then bear right (uphill) onto Panoramic Highway. In
another mile, Panoramic Highway bears slightly left (and uphill) at an irregular
four-way junction. The Pantoll parking area is about 4 miles further on the
left-hand side of Panoramic Highway. Allow 20-30 minutes for the slow and
winding drive after you leave 101.
RSVP is helpful, but not required.

| Bridges, Earthquakes and Diversity: A Caltrans Engineer
Shares Her Perspective
Susan Hida, a
civil/structural engineer with Caltrans, will discuss the political, social, and
technical realities of retrofitting bridges to withstand earthquakes in San
Francisco. This talk is geared towards individuals without an engineering
background. She will provide insights on the political constraints affecting
Caltrans engineers as well as observations on gender/racial diversity amongst
bridge engineers nationwide.
Sue is a *91 graduate of Princeton and was Project Engineer for the I-80 Seismic
Retrofit in San Francisco between 8th and 16th Streets. She is currently a
senior bridge engineer in the Caltrans Division of Structure Design and serves
as a member of the Post-Earthquake Inspection Team.
Come and meet other local alumni and enjoy a lively discussion over lunch.
Luncheon reservations are required by 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 19th; to
reserve, please contact.

| House Concert with Rebecca Plack Ferguson '91 |
7/22 |
4-6 |
San Francisco |
Dan Sullivan '63 |
| A private concert with Rebecca Plack Ferguson '91 in the
home of Nelson Wild '55.
Nelson Wild '55 will
host a private concert with Rebecca Plack Ferguson '91 for up to 20 fortunate
Princetonians in his home in San Francisco. Rebecca is a performer who
specializes in art songs of the 19th century, especially German Lieder. She is
also a musicologist who is currently researching how opera performance practice
has changed across the 20th century. She will be accompanied by Steven Bailey, a
pianist on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory.
The program will include songs by Franz Schubert and Hugo Wolf, and some rarely
performed settings by the English composer Graham Peel -- and some other
favorites as well. Much of this music was originally composed for intimate
performances in private homes, so this will be a rare opportunity to hear it in
its intended setting. Refreshments will follow the performance.
