| Academic Symposium plus Energy Crisis Panel
In continued celebration
of Princeton's Graduate School Centennial, join fellow tigers for an enriching,
academic symposium. PCNC has gathered an exciting forum of professors, each
distinguished and acclaimed in their field of expertise. Alumni Day will feature
four different courses, offering alums a broad, stimulating, and challenging
curriculum.
The event will be held at the University of California - Berkeley, Boalt School
of Law, courtesy of Daniel Rubinfeld '67. Refreshments and lunch will be

"Why the Oslo Process Failed: Perspectives on the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict"
Joel Beinin '70, Associate Professor of Middle Eastern History, Stanford
University.
Beinin's research focuses on the social history and political background of the
modern Middle East and the Arab-Israeli Conflict.
"Sultans, slaves, and concubines: The Ottoman Imperial Harem in the Golden Age"
Leslie P. Peirce *88, Professor of History, UC Berkeley
Peirce's research includes the early modern Middle East, Ottoman Studies
(14th-19th centuries), gender and sexuality, and the intersections between
religious, legal, and political cultures.
"Post 1949 U.S. - China Relations"
Gordon H. Chang '70, Associate Professor of American History, Stanford
University
Chang researches the historical connections between race and ethnicity in
America and how these factors affect foreign relations and cultural awareness.
Panel: Energy Crisis
A distinguished panel of Bay Area energy experts will discuss the California
energy crisis: What went wrong, the current status of the energy crisis, and
short and long term solutions. Speakers include:
Nathan Brostrom *89 - Vice President, J.P. Morgan & Chase, will discuss what
root causes and the financing of the purchase of power through state bonds
Mike Messenger '78 - Chief Demand Side Analyst, California Energy Commission,
will discuss the current status of the energy crisis and solutions through
demand responsiveness programs
James Tsui '79 - Consultant, will discuss the perspective of a developer and
owner of power plants
Wm. Stevens Taber, Jr. '70 - Chairman, Princeton Development Corporation, will
discuss solutions such as alternative energy resources

is comedy rich in the ambiguities of emotions, where giddy romance mixes
with the heart-breaking melancholy of loneliness, to create a living
portrait of love in all its wonderful, painful glory.
Prior to the show, CalShakes will be featuring a complimentary "Taste
Series" featuring a select food that reflects the best of the Bay Area.

| Moderately Strenuous 6 Mile Hike
You are cordially
invited to join us for an exhilarating 5.7 mile hike across some of
the most stunning terrain in the Santa Cruz Mountains. This loop hike
primarily follows the Saratoga Gap Trail and the Ridge Trail. Along
the way we will have numerous views to the west and we will visit the
stunning Castle Rock and Goat Rock sandstone formations.
Please meet in the parking lot at 10AM (parking fee $2, or park just
outside for free). We will be back to the lot by 4PM.
Directions:
From SF: Allow ~1.25 hours. Take 280 South to Woodside/Rt. 84 WEST.
At the intersection of Skyline Blvd. (Rt. 35) turn left (south) and
proceed to the stop sign (Rt. 9) Go straight on Rt. 35 2.5 miles to
the park entrance.
From San Jose: Take 880/17 South to Rt. 9. Take 9 south through Saratoga
and up to Skyline Blvd (rt. 35). At the Skyline 4-way stop go left (south)
on Rt. 35. The park entrance is in 2.5 miles.
