| Special Guest Speaker Secretary of State George Shultz '42
Join us for a very
special dinner at the Old Federal Reserve Building. Originally completed in
1924, the building has been fully restored to its original splendor and is now
included in the National Register of Historic Places.
PCNC is delighted to welcome Secretary of State George Shultz '42. Come and join
us to hear his perspective on the current state of world affairs.
George P. Shultz has had a distinguished career in government, in
academia, and in business. Appointed U.S Secretary of Labor in 1969,
he went on to serve as director of the Office of Management and
Budget and Secretary of the Treasury and to chair the Council of
Economic Advisors. Taking a leave from government, Shultz became
president and director of the Bechtel Group until his appointment
as the sixtieth U.S. secretary of state from 1982 to 1989.
Parking: PCNC flat fee of $7.50 with validation at all Embarcadero Center
Garages. Garage at Embaracdero 1 (Battery and Clay Sts) is directly accross from
the Old Federal Reserve Building.

| 4-5
mile hike from Rock Spring on Mt Tamalpais
At an elevation of almost 2000 feet, Rock Spring is the trailhead for several wonderful hikes on the upper slopes of Mt. Tamalpais. If it's a clear day, we'll take a 5-mile hike with great views in all directions. If it's drizzly, we'll take a shorter hike on trails that are more sheltered by forests. Heavy rain cancels the hike.
Driving directions: Take the Highway 1 exit from US 101, go north on Highway 1 for about 3 miles, then bear right (uphill) onto Panoramic Highway. In another mile, Panoramic Highway bears slightly left (and uphill) at an irregular four-way junction. In about 4 miles, bear right (and uphill) onto Pantoll Road towards the summit of Mt Tamalpais. The Rock Spring parking area is about a mile further at a T junction with Ridgecrest Boulevard.
RSVP is helpful, but not required.

| Venture Capital Investing Today
Peter Wendell '72 will
discuss the current venture capital environment in Silicon Valley including what
areas VCs are actively investing in and what VCs look for in companies today.
He will also provide some insights gleaned from his service on the Board of the
Princeton Investment Company and from teaching a course on entrepreneurship at
Stanford Business School.
Pete is the founder and a General Partner of Sierra Ventures, a $1 billion
venture capital fund. Prior to founding the first Sierra fund in 1982, Pete was
employed by IBM for 10 years in a variety of executive management positions.
Pete is a charter Trustee of Princeton and is one of the eight Trustees who
serve on the Board of Princeton Investment Company. He has a faculty
appointment at Stanford Business School and teaches a course on
"Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital." Pete graduated from Princeton in 1972
with an AB in Sociology and also received an MBA from Harvard University.
The lunch will be held at the offices of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, 975
Page Mill Road, Palo Alto. 975 Page Mill is half a block west of El Camino Real
on the south side of the road (N.B. this is not the main WSGR building). The
building complex is shared with Genencor; the lunch is in the building closest
to Page Mill Road.
As space is limited, please RSVP and pay before attending. Payment can be made
via a check payable to PCNC or by e-mailing money to Peter Heinecke's paypal.com
account.

| Development in San Francisco
Alfonso Felder will
discuss patterns of development in San Francisco. In this city, major building
initiatives take a lot more than bricks, mortar, concrete and steel. Development
equals politics, and politics equals problems for many developers. Pacific Bell
Park, for example, took almost 30 years to get built despite a well established
demand for a new baseball park in San Francisco. What current major projects are
likely to get built, how long will they take, and what will they ultimately look
like?
Mr. Felder is the chief Community Liason for the San Francisco Giants. He played
an important role in the lobbying effort to gain all the governmental approvals
necessary for the Pacific Bell Park project to meet its timetable for Opening
Day 2000. He is currently a Board Member of S.P.U.R. (San Francisco Planning
and Urban Research Association) and a member of the San Francisco Redevelopment
Agency?s Rincon Point ? South Beach and Mission Bay Citizen?s Advisory
Committees.

| Financial Planning for College
Attention parents: As
you know, one of most important and costly expenses facing families today is
college. The cost of a four-year degree will almost triple in 18 years – to

Bernstein, a licensed financial consultant, will discuss ways to plan for
achieving your college savings goals, the implications of the new tax laws and
California’s Section 529 Plan.
In addition, learn all about a new way to save for higher education – the State
of California’s Golden State ScholarShare College Savings Trust. This flexible
new program offers:
x Low minimum after-tax
