| Hike along Stevens Creek & up to a lookout and ridge above
Cupertino
Just a short
distance from I-280, Stevens Creek County Park and the Fremont Older
Open Space Preserve combine to provide almost 2000 acres of lush
forests and open ridges that look out over the South Bay. This 6.5
mile hike begins in the riparian forest along Stevens Creek, goes
along the Stevens Creek Reservoir, climbs to Lookout Point (1000'
high), and returns via the Coyote Ridge Trail in the Fremont Older
Open Space Preserve. Bring a windbreaker, lunch, liquids, and sunscreen.
Light rain shortens the route; heavy rain cancels the hike.
Driving directions: From I-280 in Cupertino, take the exit for Foothill
Expressway and Foothill Blvd. Follow Foothill Blvd south about two
miles, past the intersection with Stevens CREEK Blvd, to the northern
entrance to Stevens Creek Park. Take the first left into the parking
lot for the Chestnut Picnic Area. (Foothill Blvd becomes Stevens
CANYON Road shortly before the park entrance.) The parking fee is
$4.
RSVP is helpful but not required, particularly if you can offer
or need a ride.

| Prospects for Education Reform
How can we
improve our public schools? Is increased testing and accountability
the answer? What about vouchers? What is “No Child Left Behind”?
How will schools handle the newly imposed state and federal guidelines?
Why have some school districts enjoyed tremendous success and improvement
while others have languished? What does the data say, and how can
we separate fact from opinion and politics? What are the prospects
for education reform in California and what are the critical challenges
and opportunities? Come find out!
David Ogden ’89 will talk about recent federal and state school
reform legislation and lead a discussion on the issues. Mr. Ogden
is a Program/Research Associate at WestEd, a nonprofit educational
research, development, and service agency. He focuses on projects
that seek to improve educational opportunities for students and
has many years of experience working with K-12 schools on school
reform efforts. Previously, David held positions in an international
curriculum and assessment program for grades K-12 and at Princeton’s
admissions office. He started in the education teaching high school
French. Mr. Ogden received his A.B. from Princeton in French civilization
and language, and his M.A. from Stanford University in educational
policy and administration.
Come and meet other local alumni and enjoy a lively discussion over
a catered lunch. Luncheon reservations are required at least 48
hours in advance.
