SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER:
STEPHEN P. A. FODOR PhD '85
CEO and Chairman of the Board, Affymetrix
Genes, Chips and the Human Genome: Advances in Biotechnology
Join us for a very special dinner at the Fairmont, courtesy of John
Scully '66. PCNC is delighted to welcome Stephen Fodor PhD ’85,
Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Affymetrix, Inc.
Dr. Fodor invented
the DNA microarray platform, the centerpiece of which is the DNA
array, a revolutionary tool that allows
researchers to analyze large amounts of genetic information more
rapidly and more efficiently than was previously possible. The DNA
arrays are produced using a process based on semiconductor photolithographic
fabrication techniques. The method enables vast amounts of genetic
information to be contained on a small glass chip the size of a
dime. The technology has become an essential part of the modern
research laboratory as researchers work to uncover the mysteries
of health and disease. Dr. Fodor has published extensively and has
received numerous awars for his contributions to science.

"Are you negotiating
a new job offer? Wondering how to negotiate your next raise or promotion?
Are you selling a house, settling a divorce, closing a business
deal, or perhaps even drafting an international treaty? What are
the most effective ways of settling various types of disputes? Please
join the PCNC on Wednesday evening, February 12, for the next Career
Panel covering Negotiation Strategies. Our esteemed group of panelists
are all experienced negotiators from a wide variety of backgrounds
and will cover various topics related to negotiating tactics and

| Princeton, John Witherspoon and the Decision for Independence
The role of
John Witherspoon in the birth of America is little understood or
appreciated. It is doubtful that the decision for independence would
have been made without his religious sanction emanating from his
Princeton pulpit: "He is the best friend of American liberty who
combines a commitment to political freedom with a commitment to
God." Born in Scotland, John Witherspoon spent his early years in
the Abbey of Paisley. However, he later became President of the
College of New Jersey and a colleague of better-known figures such
as Alexander Hamilton, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. In addition,
he was the only religious figure to sign the Declaration of Independence.
Come find out how John Witherspoon and Princeton played critical
roles in the birth of our nation!
Maynard Garrison '50 practiced law in San Francisco from 1954 through
1984. Upon retirement, he began formal historical research projects
primarily centered on the Revolutionary period. His book on Pennsylvania
delegate James Wilson's political role and speeches is scheduled
for publication in 2003.

| HOUSEKEEPING by Marilyn Robinson
"Masterful," "poignant," "haunting," "vibrant" — these are the invariably
the words that are used to describe Marilyn Robinson's imaginative
novel *Housekeeping.* This is the story of Ruth who grows up with
her sister Lucille under the care of her grandmother, two comically
fumbling great-aunts, and the transient sister of her dead mother.
An odd story about belonging and not belonging, "Housekeeping" turns
eccentricity into poetry and grief into incandescence.
The story, like the radiant prose in which it is written, stays
with the reader for weeks after. The most impressive testimony to
this novel comes from the many readers who felt "spoken to" precisely
through the idiosyncrasy of the vision being portrayed. (An excellent
movie was made from the novel, but the book is even better because
the writing itself is not to be missed!)
Read the book and join us for tea and dialogue on at the home of
Anne Cheng Kopf '85, Associate Professor of English and American
Literature at UC Berkeley.
