San Francisco Luncheon: Morality and the Law 8/17 12-1:30 SF Michael Long '02

Can We Pass Laws About Morality in the 21st Century?

Justice Scalia says no. After the Supreme Court overturned the Texas Sodomy Laws he wrote: "This effectively decrees the end of all morals legislation. If, as the Court asserts, the promotion of majoritarian sexual morality is not even a legitimate state interest, none of the abovementioned laws can survive rational-basis review. Lawrence v. Texas (Scalia, J., dissenting)"

Dave Marshak '66 and Ron Coleman '85 wrote a paper in the Federalist Society Magazine contending we can pass laws on morality: "Our goal must be to coalesce in a consensus on morals attractive enough for a meaningful majority that again enables morals legislation, morals social policy, morals leadership – but, given the world we live in today, which does so without alienating a substantial segment of the population or leaving the other perpetually feeling aggrieved at the injustice of it all. We must not join in abandonment of our own morals, which include our ancient belief that we are, indeed, responsible for the moral state of our brothers, as well as our American faith in reason, common sense and that, when in doubt, we should choose the liberty of the individual."

Dave Marshak and Amber Homolka, a newly minted lawyer from LSU, will lead a lunch discussion of this subject at the Ernst and Young offices in San Franciso on Wednesday August 17 at noon.

Inverness Ridge Trails in Pt Reyes 8/27 10:30-4 Olema Dan Sullivan '63
Scenic 5-mile hike on Inverness Ridge in Pt Reyes National Seashore

The western slope of Inverness Ridge offers great views over Drakes Bay and the forests that are recovering from the fire of the mid-1990s. This 5-6 mile hike will stay high on the Bayview, Drakes View, and Inverness Ridge Trails. There are no facilities at the Bayview trailhead, and parking is limited, so we will meet at the Bear Valley Visitor Center before going to the trailhead. Bring lunch, liquids, sunscreen, and windbreaker. (The Visitor Center has water, but no food.) RSVP is helpful, particularly if you can offer or need a ride.

Driving directions: Take the San Anselmo/Sir Francis Drake exit from 101. Go west on Sir Francis Drake Blvd about 21 miles to Hwy 1 in Olema. Turn right, then make an immediate left onto Bear Valley Road. In less than a half mile turn left at a sign for Pt Reyes National Seashore, and continue to the Bear Valley Visitor Center. Allow an hour for the drive from 101 to the Visitor Center.
