| The Hidden Assumptions of 9/11 Discourse - Five Years On |
10/5 |
6-8 |
San Francisco |
David
Marshak '66 |
| David Caploe *83 will examine the dynamics of public /
political / media discourse five years after the September 11
attacks.
In our continuing series
on US / global relations, especially with the Middle East, David Caploe *83 will
examine the dynamics of public / political / media discourse five years after
the September 11 attacks.
While the immediate reaction was "this changes everything," it is hard to see
much evidence of that anywhere in American daily life, with the exception of air
travel -- an already annoying experience for most people, now aggravated by
"security measures" whose effectiveness remains unclear.
But one major area where 9/11 has had a significant impact is public discourse
re US relations with the rest of the world -- above all, although certainly not
limited to, the Arab / Muslim realm -- most notably in the framework of
assumptions informing and organizing the ways politicians and media in
particular discuss contemporary issues.
While there are definite continuities with significant aspects of pre - 9 / 11
"public" discourse, those key assumptions have tended to move in a specific
direction, making today's national "conversation" dangerously narrow / muddled /
and out of touch with evident and unavoidable global realities.
This is particularly disturbing given the radically de-stabilizing challenge of
political Islam, the crucial aspect of the current situation that no American
discourse -- "official" / media / academic / popular -- has recognized or
acknowledged, thus making impossible the development of any meaningful and
realistic strategy for dealing with it.
David Caploe has an AB in social theory from Harvard, and an MA in politics and
PhD in international political economy from Princeton. Creator of the Digital
Encyclopedia of the Global Media Society, and the political blog Grok Your
World, he has taught at Duke, Fordham, North Carolina State, the University of
Miami, Strayer and Mirus Universities, as well as New College in San
Francisco.

| Cruise in beautiful San Francisco Bay with Blue Angels
Flyover
Princeton Club members
will have the best seats in town for the legendary Blue Angels Air Show for
Fleet Week, one of San Francisco's favorite annual events. The Empress yacht
will be filled with orange and black as Princetonians enjoy a two-hour cruise

beverages will be available via cash bar.) We'll depart from Pier 40 and take in
San Francisco Bay's most beloved sights: ATT Park, Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf,
Ghirardelli Square, Alcatraz, the bridges and maybe even some sea lions and
harbor seals. There will be ample indoor and outdoor seating from which to enjoy
the views. Wear your orange and black for the festivities!
The yacht will begin boarding at 2:15pm at Pier 40 in South Beach Harbor near
ATT Park in San Francisco and will depart promptly at 2:30 pm. (Note Pier 40,
South Beach Harbor is near ATT Park and not next to Pier 39! The even numbered
piers are on the southeast side of the city. See below for parking and
directions.) The yacht will return and dock at 4:30 pm.
All Princeton alumni are welcome at this event, but as a special thank
you to our members, member ticket prices have been partially subsidized by the

| JOHN BRADY KIESLING Fmr. Political Counselor, U.S.
Embassy, Athens; Author, Diplomacy Lessons
Hear from that rarest of
individuals -- a public servant who resigned his office over a matter of
principle.
When Princeton visiting lecturer Brady Kiesling quit his job as political
counselor of the U.S. Embassy in Athens in 2003, his letter protesting the Bush
administration's impending invasion of Iraq reverberated around the world.
In support of his book Diplomacy Lessons, he will discuss the ways the United
States' own actions have blackened its international image, and what it must do
to regain global respect.
Born in 1957 in Houston, Kiesling grew up in Los Altos, California. He graduated
from Swarthmore College with a degree in ancient Greek, and earned an MA in
ancient history and Mediterranean archaeology at UC Berkeley. After fieldwork as
an archaeologist in Spain, Greece, and Turkey, he joined the U.S. Foreign
Service in 1983 under President Reagan. His first diplomatic posting was vice
consul and aide to the US ambassador in Tel Aviv.
Since his departure from the State Department in 2003, he has been writing and
speaking on U.S. foreign policy, including a stint at Princeton. His articles
and essays have been published in the New York Review of Books, Salon.com, and
major newspapers. He lives in Athens, Greece

| David Caploe *83 and David Marshak '66 will examine the
influence of rhetoric - broadly conceived - in the way we choose our
leaders.
We will look at the
flaws and virtues among all the players: politicians, mainstream and
"alternative" media, and the emerging internet-based world of the "blogosphere."
Please join us for what has become an intriguing and provocative series of PCNC
events, attended by very bright and articulate people from all over the Bay
Area.
David Marshak is an authority on how humans create systems that work and how
they create systems which do not work. He is a retired Vice President and
Technology Manager at Bank of America and has a systems consulting business,
