David Marshak '66 |
| Nancy Ellen Abrams and Joel Primack will talk
about the new picture of the universe emerging from modern cosmology and
how we humans fit into it.
Nancy and Joel
alternate speaking frequently during during their entertaining
multimedia presentation, which includes humor, videos, music, and lots
of visuals. Their talk is based on their new book, The View from the
Center of the Universe: Discovering Our Extraordinary Place in the
Cosmos (Riverhead Books/Penguin, 2006). The book was chosen as a 2006
summer reading selection by NPR's All Things Considered, it was featured
in the July 2006 Smithsonian magazine and recommended by the editors of
Scientific American, and Nancy and Joel were interviewed on John
McLaughlin's One-on-One TV show, on Barry Kibrick's Between the Lines
PBS-TV show, and on many radio programs. For more on the book including
reviews and feature articles, see http://viewfromthecenter.com
Nancy did her undergraduate work at the University of Chicago.
Joel Primack's research has mainly been in relativistic quantum field
theory and in cosmology and particle astrophysics, a field that he has
helped to create. In collaboration with UCSC astronomers George
Blumenthal and Sandra Faber and others, he developed the ``Cold Dark
Matter'' (CDM) theory, which has helped to set the agenda for
theoretical and observational cosmology for two decades.
In addition to being the valedictorian of Princeton's class of '66, Joel
also has a Harvard connection: He was a Junior Fellow of the Harvard
Society of Fellows 1970-73.
This talk is co-sponsored by the Harvard Club of San
Francisco.

| 6-7 mile hike high on Mt Tamalpais
Enjoy some of
the many attractions high on Mt Tamalpais. The Rock Spring trailhead is
at an elevation of almost 2000 feet, giving us access to several
wonderful hikes. If it's clear, we will go along the north side of the
mountain toward the summit, and then return along the south side with a
pause at the West Point Inn. If it's drizzly, we'll take a shorter hike
on trails that are more sheltered by forests. Bring lunch, and be
prepared for temperatures 5-10 degrees cooler than at sea level. Heavy
rain cancels the hike.
Directions: Take the Highway 1 exit from US 101 north of the Golden Gate
Bridge. Go north on Highway 1 about three miles, and bear right (uphill)
onto Panoramic Highway. In another mile Panoramic Highway bears slightly
left (uphill) at an irregular four-way junction. About four miles later,
bear right (uphill again) onto Pantoll Road toward the Mt Tam summit.
The Rock Spring parking area is 1.4 miles farther at a T junction with
Ridgecrest Boulevard.
RSVP is helpful, but not required.
