| Afternoon walk through the Lands End area at the northwest
edge of San Francisco
The Lands End area at
the northwestern edge of San Francisco is now part of the Golden Gate National
Parks. It offers many special attractions, including the ruins of Adolph Sutro's
giant oceanside bathhouse, the Coastal Trail with stunning views of the Golden
Gate, and windswept Lands End Point with a creative rock labyrinth to challenge
walkers. Our route will include these highlights, plus the Palace of the Legion
of Honor plaza, the VA Medical Center at Fort Miley, a memorial for the USS San
Francisco, and sunset over the Pacific. Dress in layers (something warm plus a
windbreaker). Princeton friends and children are welcome, but the route is not
suitable for strollers.
Driving directions: From the south, come up the Great Highway past the Cliff
House, and look for the Merrie Way parking area on your left as you drive
uphill. From the east, go out Geary Blvd past 38th Ave, where the main road
becomes Point Lobos Ave, and continue west until you see the parking area on the
right as you go downhill toward the Cliff House.
RSVP is helpful, but not required.

| SF Symphony performance of Dvorak's
Join Jen Huang '05 and
Dan Sullivan '63 for a performance of Antonin Dvorak's symphony "From the New
World," which was inspired by American folk tunes and spirituals, and the
"Concerto for Two Pianos" by Bohuslav Martinu, Dvorak's 20th-century musical
heir. This performance is part of the San Francisco Symphony's "Friday 6.5
Series," which features an early start to allow time for post-performance
activities, plus introductory comments by the conductor with insights about each
piece on the program. Our PCNC group tickets are very limited, so send your
reservation by e-mail as soon as possible, and mail your check (payable to PCNC)
by October 29. PCNC members may bring one guest at the member price.
For more information about the program, visit the SF Symphony website at

Thomas Hanks is a
geophysicist at the US Geologival Survey and Princeton '66. Tom has a
collection of about 450 pictures his father took in 1927 and 1928 in northern AZ
and southern UT, while he was traveling with Clyde Kluckhohn, who went on to
become one of the great anthropologists of the 20th Century. He has spent a lot
of time over the past four years doing repeat photography at these sites and ~10
% of these pairs show significant ecological/geological change. This will be a
fascinating discussion for anyone interested in, and concerned about, changes in
the earth over a short time horizon and for anyone with a passion for
photography.
Please join us for this session - and remember to provide notice if your plans
change as lunches are ordered for each rsvp. Respond by email, please.

| This will be an open ended symposium
All of us have a stake
in this. We each have our own perspective and all of our views are important.
There is no way to solve this working only from the top down. We need to hear
every voice.
The Andrew Speaker TB scare has shown that the health problems of the poorest
among us and on earth are the problem of all of us. Disease is no respecter of
wealth and social standing. Untreated mental health problems are as bad; but
their consequences lurk beneath the surface. There is no way to calculate or
control the harm one seriously ill person who gets no treatment or the wrong
treatment will do.
So let us gather together and think it through together.

| Priceless opportunity to view private collection featuring
Haitian art with collector Arthur Albrecht, '48
Over the last couple
years, Arthur Albrecht, '48 has opened his home at the base of famous Lombard
Street to Princeton alums joining PCNC urban walks of Nob Hill and Russian Hill.
He's thrown wonderful receptions at the close of the walks, and anyone lucky
enough to stop by has had tantalizing glimpses of Arthur's amazing art
collection. PCNC asked, and he has graciously agreed, to open his collection to
a private viewing by Princeton community members!
Arthur Albrecht, '48 has been collecting his remarkable collection for over 50
years, largely from travels as well as from local galleries and other sources. A
large portion of his collection is Haitian. He began collecting Haitian art at a
time when it was relatively inexpensive and developed an early interest because
he had the opportunity to travel to Haiti. He also had contact with a number of
people knowledgeable in Haitian art. The work he has collected over the last
half-century represents most of the well-recognized artists in the Haitian art
world, and consists of several dozen paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings,
etchings, maps, books, newspaper articles, and photographs.
In addition to Haitian art, he has collected ancient Chinese ceramic and stone
work, a Chinese drawing, Mexican art, unusual Syrian paintings by a contemporary
artist, as well as unique framed pieces from antique books and newspapers. This
is a rare opportunity to view an amazing private collection, guided by the
collector. The tour will last approximately 2 hours, with a reception following
to begin at about 6:45, and planned to coincide with sunset. Weather permitting,
the view from Arthur's house of the city will be spectacular!
RSVP required. Limited to 75 people.

| Gather to discuss books with area alumnae!
On the third Tuesday of
each month, the PWN Book Club gathers in a member's home or an area restaurant
to eat, chat, and (usually) discuss that month's literary selection. The
location changes from month to month so we can be welcoming to alumnae from all
over the Bay Area, and books are chosen by consensus with those who show up!
Recent selections have included both fiction and non-fiction, modern and
classic, from "Uncle Tom's Cabin" to "The Botany of Desire", "The Virgin
Suicides", and "Ender's Game". New participants are welcome all the
time.
