San Francisco Discovery Walk: Mission/Noe/Castro Area 2/3 1:30-4:30 San Francisco Chrissy Holland '03
Afternoon walk through San Francisco's historic and popular Mission, Noe Valley & Castro neighborhoods

San Francisco's Mission Dolores is one of the oldest buildings in California. The very popular Noe Valley neighborhood is a short walk away, over a hill to the south. The vibrant Castro District is a few blocks to the west. These residential areas escaped damage from the post-earthquake fire in 1906, so they offer an interesting and varied display of San Francisco architecture. After a tour of Mission Dolores and its historic cemetery ($5 admission), we will walk through quiet residential streets over the hill to the heart of the Noe Valley neighborhood, and then wind through the Castro District before ending with snacks and conversation at the home of Glenn Stover '71. Princeton friends and children are welcome. Light rain may shorten the route; heavy rain cancels the outing.

Parking is difficult in the Mission Dolores neighborhood, but the Mission is readily accessible by BART (go 3 blocks west from the 16th/Mission station) or by several lines of the SF Muni. Glenn Stover's house (where we will finish) is a few minutes' walk away from the Castro/Market intersection, where BART riders can take a Muni Metro underground trolley to a BART station in downtown San Francisco. It takes about 15 minutes to walk from Glenn's house back to the starting point at Mission Dolores.

RSVP is requested, but not required.

Volunteer at the Larkin Street Youth Services Drop-In Center

Join Princeton alumni in helping Larkin Street Youth Services in their mission to respond to the unique needs of homeless and runaway youth on the streets of San Francisco. Larkin Street has worked over the years to meet both the immediate and long-term needs of the young people they serve.

Our primary responsibility at Larkin Street will be to prepare a hot lunch at the Drop-In Center. The youth at the center will be encouraged to help out with the cooking, as it is an important life skill for them learn and would provide for some meaningful interaction. PWN Second Wednesday Book Club 2/13 7-10 TBA Amanda Whitehead '00
Gather to discuss books with area alumnae.

On the second Wednesday of each month, the PWN Book Club gathers in a member's home or an area restaurant to eat, chat, and (usually) discuss that month's literary selection. The location changes from month to month so we can be welcoming to alumnae from all over the Bay Area, and books are chosen by consensus with those who show up! Recent selections have included both fiction and non-fiction, modern and classic, from "Uncle Tom's Cabin" to "The Botany of Desire", "The Virgin Suicides", and "Ender's Game". New participants are welcome all the time.

The performance is part of the San Francisco Symphony's "Friday 6.5 Series," which features introductory comments by the conductor about each piece on the program. The early start time allows for an informal post-performance supper at a nearby restaurant. Forecasting the impact of science-based innovation 2/19 12-1:30 San Francisco David Marshak '66
The recent surge in funding of the Cleantech industry illustrates how physical science-based technologies are again returning to the forefront of innovation.

Cleantech encompasses "clean" technologies that work towards the sustainable use of resources and a reduction of waste, with solar power and energy efficiency as two familiar examples. Today’s sustainable technologies benefit from the advances in computational power and information technology achieved over the past generation, which have enabled a finer degree of control over the design of materials and systems. Kristin will discuss the current landscape of nanomaterials, solar power, and alternative power and energy storage, as well as factors that influence the acceptance of new technologies.

Kristin Abkemeier is an analyst at Lux Research covering a broad range of emerging technologies including nanotechnology, semiconductor memory, and alternative power systems. Lux Research provides strategic advice and on-going intelligence for emerging technologies. She is a Princeton 1990 graduate, earned an MPhil from the University of Cambridge and later a PhD in experimental condensed matter physics from the University of Chicago in 1997, and went on to work as a software developer and science communications consultant before coming to Lux Research.

Samuel Beckett's Endgame 2/23 8-9:30 San Francisco Paige Rogers '89
The Cutting Ball Theater's production of Endgame

Sharper and more satirical than Waiting for Godot, this absurdist masterpiece takes place as civilization is about to end. Based on the last moves of a chess game, the play follows the attacks and parries of the world's four remaining inhabitants, two of whom live in garbage cans. (This is the play that inspired Oscar the Grouch!)

Cutting Ball founders Rob Melrose '92 and Paige Rogers '89 will hold a discussion after the show about Endgame, about Beckett, about the founding of Cutting Ball Theater and whatever else you may want to talk about!
